Budapest, Hungary
The weather was cool over in Budapest, water temp at 14c and air temp about 16c with damp/wet roads. Nonetheless, there were World Championship titles to decide. The race was held over swim-750m / ride-20km / run-5km distance.
Ben Wright put in a fantastic performance which produced a great result. In his 25-29 age-group he was 4th after the swim, 3rd after the ride and held on to be 3rd at the finish, winning a BRONZE medal in the World Championships!!! His time was 8th overall amongst all age-group athletes.
My first news of his result came with Ben’s phone call on Saturday evening – he was absolutely stoked about how well his race went. He commented about how competitive and fast the race was, and how much better he raced against several of the same athletes from the aquathon on Wednesday. His call made my day. (The 2nd place getter from last year’s race came about 20th – a sign of how strong the field was.)
Ben’s result is even more remarkable given the painful leg injury he’s had for the last 6 weeks which severely affected his running and which we had to change plans to limit how much he did and get the most benefit from it, and supplementing it with deep water running. He had two cortisone injections in the last 4 weeks. It was Ben’s determination, motivation and strength of spirit that achieved this result…plus the support we all gave him.
We should all feel some pride in the performances from others in our group, Ben being case in point.
